Verklempt is Yiddish, by way of the German 'verklemmt', meaning clenched or jammed. It is the exact instant emotion arrives and gets swallowed at the same time: the throat tightening, the tears welling but not falling, a small brave smile drafted in to hold the whole thing together. Choked up, and holding it.
